Throwing People Off Balance

Standing on Chambers Street, we try to work out what to do. The group splits and a girl says, ‘Hope you had a good evening, enjoy the rest of your birthday,’ masking sincerity. Another girl is surprised and says, ‘I didn’t know it was your birthday.’ ‘Why would you?’ I reply and she looks affronted, eventually offering some reason about people and vibes, and then a bewildered, awkward silence. It was wonderful.
